Hillside Garden

Sevenoaks, Kent

A concept design for a steeply sloping rear garden, commissioned by a keen gardener and family of four who enjoy al fresco cooking and dining. Our client wanted to turn much of the existing sloping lawn over to perennial and shrub planting, whilst expanding the patio area near the house. An element of productive planting, including fruiting trees, also needed to be worked into the design.

Central to our approach was reducing the need for significant retaining walls and hardscape intervention on the slope. Working with the existing contours as far as possible, we designed a garden with three harmonious but distinct areas: the first for cooking, dining and productive planting; the second for perennial and shrub gardening; and the third a meadow orchard complete with a perch spot to enjoy views from the top of the hill.
